As Telefonica Movistar IMS600 is disqualified

Sunday July 13th 2003, Author: John Roberson, Location: United Kingdom
A protest against the Real Club Nautico de Sangenjo's IMS600 Telefonica Movistar sailed by Pedro Campos from the Royal Southern small boat Dickie's Yacht Sales has resulted in a turn around on the leader board of the Admiral's Cup with the Australian team now moving to the fore.

The protest was the result of an incident at the weather mark where the boom on the Spanish boat ran down the weather rail of the British boat.

In the protest the following facts were found:

- Telefonica Movistar rounded the windward mark on starboard tack and hoisted her spinnaker while bearing away
- Telefonica Movistar was bearing away until she luffed to avoid a collision
- Dickies Yacht Sales was approaching the windward mark on port tack
- Dickies Yacht Sales luffed to try and go to windward of Telefonica Movistar as she
considered that a collision was about to occur
- Telefonica Movistar luffed to try and avoid Dickies Yacht Sales
- Dickies Yacht Sales then bore away hard to avoid Movistar
- When Telefonica Movistar was approximately two and a half boat lengths from the
mark a collision occurred
- A crew member of Dickies Yacht Sales was injured in the collision

As starboard tack boat Telefonica Movistar was obliged by rule 16 not to change course
without giving Dickies Yacht Sales room to keep clear and as a result was in breach of rule 16.
