Local favorite Good Timin skippered by Chris Perkins won this year’s championship hosted by The St. Francis Yacht Club and San Francisco Bay Fleet 1. The winning team included Jon Perkins, Phil Perkins, John Collins, Amy Leroy, and Dave Wilson. Good Timin finished with a total of 31 points (4,4,7,6,6,1,3) proving once again that consistency wins in a fleet of 39 boats.
Today’s first race began in the tail end of the ebb tide forcing the tacticians to choose between the tantalizing right shifting breeze or the shallower water up the south side of the Bay. 39 Boats spread out across the Bay entrance in a spectacular line up, leaving all the spectators to place their bets and watch the scene play out. Unfortunately, the flood began too soon for the right to make it back over the channel and Zuni Bear went up the City-front leaving Nantucket Sleighride in the very lifted but lagging Right-side pack well behind them.
Zuni Bear won the 15 degree favored Committee boat end at the start of the second race and never relinquished the lead. Regatta Chairman, Tony Chargin and Race Manager, John Craig made the decision to favor the line to avoid the pile-ups on the pin end due to current relief on the City-Front shore line. “It’s where they all want to go, and this is the only way that any of them will make it there alive,” said John Craig. “Zuni Bear made a great decision – they were up a ladder rung, and they still made it over to the shore as soon as the rest of them.”
This 7 race, no throw out regatta, consisted of 2 races each day (Thursday, Friday and Sunday) and one longer race on Saturday. 39 Boats from all over the country competed. Furthest traveled included Don Priestly’s team on Wet Paint from Mashpee, MA, James Doane from Naples, FL and Jim Sorensen from Sag Harbor, NY.
Zuni Bear (Rich Bergmann / Shawn Bennett, San Diego, CA) finished second overall in the regatta, and Bold Forbes (Jack Franco / Ed Cummins, Corona Del Mar, CA) took third place. Peter Wagner from Atherton, CA on Nantucket Sleighride finished fourth, and Jim Sorensen from Sag Harbor, NY on Masquerade finished in fifth place overall.
