Etchells off and running
Monday September 22nd 2003, Author: Simon Russell, Location: United States
Since the departure of "Isobel" and the 20 to 40 knots of wind in Long Island sound. Day one of the Etchell's worlds experienced an extremley light and difficult day 1!
The practice race was abandoned at mark one with the leaders taking over 45 minutes to reach it and the rest who didn't stopping for their lunch.
After a long delay, some sizeable windshifts and a couple of postponements racing got underway when the breeze had built to 6knots at 190 degrees. Understanding the shifts and spotting the increase in Breeze was proving hard.
First to the top mark was Judd Smith with Most boats coming from the starboard end filling the top twenty positions. It was snakes and ladders all the way to the finish of a long brain frying race with the wind at 320degrees as we crossed the line.
1st to finish was USA 1001 Bill Fortenberry, 2nd USA 1262 Ken Read, and 3rd NZL 1184 Cameron Appleton.
The British fleet stuggled in these light conditions with only Roger Wickens, Jarvis tilly and Stuart Childerley ending in the top 25 of the 95 strong fleet.
