Knickerbocker Cup
Friday August 29th 2003, Author: Andrea Watson, Location: United States
There was great wind on Manhasset Bay for the second day of racing at the 2003 Knickerbocker Cup.
Skippers and crew were up early and eager to get out on the water to test their mettle against the some of the best match racers in the world. Teams came from near and far to compete in this well-run event hosted by the Knickerbocker YC, the third oldest and one of the best known yacht clubs in the country.
The Race Committee was able to complete eleven matches for the day by starting early and keeping the teams out till almost past dinner.
There was a slight interruption during the middle of the day, when RC was forced to fly the 'follow me' flag and move the racecourse out past Plum Point, which is the outer part of Manhasset Bay.
Sailors arrived on shore before all the food was gone, tired and happy, but looking forward to John Standley’s illustrated talk on the Louis Vuitton and America’s Cup.
Standley, who is an International Match Race umpire, is here as the event’s Chief Umpire, and offered to speak on his “insider” view of the Cup. He donated his time to help the Manhasset Bay Sailing Foundation which supports and encourages local high school sailing teams by providing coaching and scholarship funds.
