Mild conditions for final day of winter series

Simon Forbes reports on today's conclusion of the Royal Southampton YC series

The eighth race of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Winter series was held today and saw some sunshine and a southeasterly breeze of 8-10 knots.

The Race Management Team set the Committee Boat near Netley. The multihulls were started first and were tightly bunched at the favoured committee boat end.

Class 1 saw Tim Octon’s Corby 35 Njos take line honours and victory on corrected time by nearly four minutes from Mike Garvey’s X-332 X Parrott with third Peter Jones X-332 Hoodlum. Overall in the series Njos won by one point from X Parrot with third Nicholas Barlow’s Dehler 36DBS Draig O’R Mor.

Class 2 saw Liz and Chris Savage’s J/80 Just Savage take line honours and victory on corrected time from Steve Sault’s Sigma 33 Hooligan with Ian Barry and Robert Clark’s Evolution 22 Glass Onion third. Overall in the series Jokers Wild won by two points from Hooligan with Glass Onion third.

Class 3 Club Handicap saw Tony Hanfrey’s Etchells Playgirl take line honours by five minutes and victory on corrected time from Steve and Wendy Flick’s X332 Blue Moviez with Richard Walker’s Micro Gem Urchin II third. Overall in the series Ginny Bennett’s Dehler 36CWS won by 1 point from Andrew Campbell’s Bavaria 44 Faze 3 with third Simon Potter’s First 211 Loki.

In the Multihull Class Ian Loffhagen’s F25C Sheik Yerbouti was first to finish, James Stewart’s Dragonfly 920 won on corrected time from George Burn’s Farrier F27 Smokey Bear with sistership Beatus (Grant Kelly) third. Overall in the series Ngalawa won by 7 points from Smokey Bear with Sheik Yerbouti third.
