Wind speed for your smartphone

Introducing Vaavud

Monday January 6th 2014, Author: James Boyd, Location: none selected

If you didn't get one of these for Christmas, then your birthday may be coming soon...

The Vaavud is an anemometer that neatly plugs into the headphone jack socket of your smartphone. With the accompanying app for your iOS or Android downloaded, your phone is empowered to monitor and record wind speed. Certainly we're going to keep this in our pocket at regattas this year.

Currently enabled for the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and HTC One, Vaavud was created two years ago by enterprising Danish student Andreas Bruun as part of his thesis. Since then the product has been further developed and distribution deals have been set up in 12 countries - through meridianzero in the UK and Ronstan in the USA for example.

While the Vaavud is extremely handy, we hope that a second generation version incorporates a Windex too.

Available in white, red and green, the Vaavud retails for 45€.
