Steve Fossett and his nine man crew are to be awarded EDS’ 24-hour Multihull World Speed Record trophy for breaking the fastest
24-hour run with a 687.17nm run during their record breaking TransAtlantic voyage - confirming
PlayStation as the fastest sail boat in the world.
The trophy, a spectacular Italian designed glass structure, will be awarded, along with a cash prize, to the team upon ratification of the record by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
The new award was announced this year during the inaugural EDS Atlantic Challenge.
Gordon Moultrie, EDS Vice President EMEA, explains: "We wanted to encourage sailors to achieve excellence by pushing the limits, break existing speed records and set new ones. Our congratulations go to Steve Fossett and his team for their incredible 24 hour run and for smashing the record."
"Steve and his team have now set a precedent which others skippers are likely to want to try and beat. But, in the meantime, we’re delighted to be able to award the trophy to Steve and his team for their tremendous success."
EDS also sponsors the Monohull World Speed Record which is currently held by Bernard Stamm aboard Superbbigou (named Armor Lux-Foie Graz Bizac when the record was set). The distance sailed needs to be at least one mile greater than the previous record in order to be ratified by the World Speed Sailing Record Council, the body that oversees new records.
