Kinsale Yacht Club's top regatta awaits 160 yachts for start next week

The 2003 Sovereign’s Cup regatta kicks off at Kinsale Yacht Club next Wednesday. 160 entries from throughout Ireland and abroad have already started to arrive in Kinsale and its estimated that over E2.5 million will be injected into the local economy during the event.

The regatta will feature the first ever cruiser National Championship, to be held in Class 2. The winners will go forward to represent Class 2 in the Champion of Champions event at the end of the season.

The Sovereign’s Cup programme lists two races per day for Classes 0, 1, 2, 3 and Impalas and one per day for the Non Spinnaker class for the four days of the event. Racing will commence at 1100 hrs. each day, with competitors advised to take at least one hour to get from the yacht club marina to the race area at the mouth of the harbour.

Racing will be provided on three separate courses and one windward/leeward and one round the cans is planned for each fleet each day.

A practice race has just been announced for Tuesday, June 24 for Classes 0, 1 and 2 only. The race will be ‘round the cans with a start time of 1300 hrs. Sailing Instructions for the Sovereign’s Cup Regatta 2003 will apply.

The Royal Cork Yacht Club are planning a feeder race to the event this Sunday. Details are available from the RCYC Class Captain.
