A thick pall of smoke hung over Sydney Harbour as the fleet set out for Hobart. Despite a bright summer day diminished to a dull red glow as a pale sun shone through the smoke, the Sydney-siders turned out in force to watch the fleet depart.

were not alone in struggling to decide which sail to put up.
