One Ton Cup Corel 45 World Championship - Day 3

Atalanti X takes over lead as Brits slip

Saturday September 2nd 2000, Author: Gerald New, Location: United Kingdom
On the third day of racing at the One Ton Cup, with the Mistral blowing, four races were sailed on windward/leeward courses with the first five yachts in close contention for overall honours.
Atalanti X, the IC45 helmed by American Ken Read (who was helmsman of "Team Dennis Conner" in the last America's Cup) was fastest out of the start at the gun and went left. That choice proved to be the right one as they lead the fleet to the finishing line where the Greek yacht was followed by Faster K-Yote II and Cavale bleu.

In the second race the British boat, Indulgence missed first place by only a couple of metres after a very good start by skipper Adrian Stead. Atlanti X caught them just before the line with Cavale Bleu third.

In the third race Cavale Bleu had an injured crew member who had to be taken off and then an individual recall that made them late finally reaching the finishing line, in 10th and thus lost the overall leadership. Serono finished the race with her second victory of the day, followed in a few seconds by Babbalaas and Atalanti X, who is the new leader.

If two more races are sailed tomorrow, as scheduled, they will have the chance to discard their two worst results so at least the first four yachts in the
overall results will be in with a chance to win the championship.
