Ed Gorman watched events unfold in the 150th anniversary of the America's Cup round the island race

But they came, one after another, lovely immaculately turned out varnished beauties, surrounded by a maelstrom of spectator craft. After the oldest small gaffers and the modern IMS and IRC division yachts, the entire 35-strong 12-Metre fleet set sail together, a living history of a class with designs dating as far back as the late 1920s competing against the racing machines of the mid-80s.

Then it was the turn of the modern America's Cup Class and after them the Js with the 23-Metre, Cambria, which gets my vote as the most stunning boat in this extraordinary fleet. Cambria is exactly as she was in her heyday and her vast but simple sail plan set on acres of immaculate teak, simply cannot fail to take your breath away.
