Third win for illbruck...

The illbruck team celebrate Rio-style. Something is definitely different about this stopover...

Though miles were won and lost as the teams powered through the Southern Ocean the tactically most interesting part of the leg was between Cape Horn and the finish line here in Rio. Two boats, Grant Dalton's Amer Sports One and Knut Frostad's djuice, made a move to the east of the Falkland Islands. The weather models indicated more wind, but coming directly on the nose, however the teams gained from the move - with Frostad pulling up to third place for a short period of time. illbruck playing their usual conservative tactics left the Falklands on starboard.

Although at one point they had extended their lead to 97 miles - a respectable to pull out on pace alone - knowing the likely conditions they would experience off Rio it was still a tense time for the illbruck team. After the Falklands there was a scan of almost 200 miles between those furthest east and djuice and Amer Sports One in the west - a very wide race track to cover those chasing. Taking the middle ground illbruck's lead was rapidly eaten away, dropping to around 45 miles before the two groups again converged after the Falklands.

Since then it has been close racing between the top five boats. Patchy and shifty winds compressed the fleet further, with the last 60 miles seeing second to fifth place separated by only a couple of miles for the majority of the time. illbruck may still have held a respectable margin over the fleet, always successfully defending any offensive moves, but the rest of the fleet continued to push hard, trying to find openings to pass Kostecki's seemingly unstoppable team.

Grant Dalton's Amer Sports One persisted with the right hand side while Frostad's djuice made a move across the fleet to the left hand side. In the almost non-existant night time breeze the boats have been jostling for position. With 50 miles to the finish second to fifth were separated by only 1.5 miles - a tribute to all the teams and the competitiveness of the fleet considering the 5,700 miles already raced.

Djuice is the second boat due in at around 1130 GMT.

In the overall standings after leg 4, this leaves illbruck with a resounding 29 points, now with a clear margin over Grant Dalton's Amer Sports One.
