More like a fitful Garda

TheDailySail's Toby Heppell reports on a day of extremes at the 49er Europeans in Weymouth PLUS photos

Wednesday July 26th 2006, Author: Toby Heppell, Location: United Kingdom
It was another strange day on Tuesday in Weymouth for the 49er European and 29er World Championship.

When the fleets arrived at the beginning of the day the breeze was blowing a consistent 12 knots inside the harbor with fantastic sunshine again. However, the race committee soon informed all fleets there was less than five knots outside the harbor wall.

In the 49er fleet groups were not changed from the previous day with both the fleets that were one race behind being sent out early to race in the harbor.

Out on the water the conditions however were fantastic with the thermal effect of Portland building on the gradient breeze to create a solid 15 to 18 knots. The only real problem with the sailing in this early part of the day was the lack of tactics. As it was a Portland thermal and there was still no breeze in the harbour the important thing to do was stay as close to Portland as possible where there was about 7 knots more breeze. This evolved ringing the right hand bell hard and stacking up on the starboard layline upwind, gybe setting round the windward, banging the same corner again downwind before gybe dropping through the leeward gate then doing the whole thing again. A thinking man's game it was not.

Racing was going well and everyone seemed to be enjoying the conditions that were gradually building to around the 20 knot mark. After being ashore for some time, my fleet (blue) were sent out at around 3:00pm to complete a single race, leaving us even with green fleet. Off the beach and the breeze was pretty solid with a few struggling with the big bear away to get down to the start line. We had a pretty bow heavy bear off but survived it and stuck the kite up only to get to the race area where there was literally no wind. Half an hour after flat out extreme sailing we were being towed ashore to wait once again for our race. The Olympic venue is not showing its best side.

Light winds dominated the second half of the day when most of the 29ers were sailing. There was much shuffling on the beach as fleets were sent out and brought back in attempts to keep everyone even. Somehow the 49ers are still not even with two different fleets one race behind. This means we go into the final day of qualifying still in the same groups as day one, although I am assured they will change after a catch up race from two groups today.

Results wise it is still hard to say who is doing well due to the skewed results. In the 49er fleet the Sibello brothers have made a strong charge counting on third or first places but Draper and Hiscocks are still hanging in there. In the 29er fleet the places have changes again with both Hentinen and Pennanen and Lehtinen and Babbage from Finland overhauling Paul Brotherton and Mari Sheppard.
