French and Spanish teams jockey for lead in the Yngling Europeans in Medemblik

Friday July 28th 2006, Author: Simon Keijzer, Location: none selected
After five races in the European Championships for the Yngling the tension is definitely rising. There are at least ten favourites still vying for the title. The French team of Anne Le Helley is still leading with 21 points. Current World Champion Monica Azon is in  second place also with 21 points. Nicola Bethwaite from Australia is third with 22 points. Number ten in the ranking has 30 points. All three Dutch boats are in the top ten.

Today the first race was nearing completion when a big thundercloud changed the wind in strength and direction. This forced the race committee to abandon the race.

The second race was sailed in light airs from the North. The weak sea breeze was sufficient to get race five finished leaving all the competitors one race to discard. Winner was the team of  Ruslana Taran, followed by the Japanese of Yumiko Shige with Vladelina Ilienko from Russia in third.

The race committee is trying to get two more races (race six and seven) sailed today on 28 July. Tomorrow is the final show down. First start is planned at 11 o’clock. Last start no later than 16.00 hours.
