Ayton takes the lead

An un-characteristic ninth place by Sally Barkow at the Yngling World Championships has handed the lead to the Brits

Wednesday July 5th 2006, Author: Media Release, Location: United Kingdom

The second day, Tuesday, of racing started in a seven to eight knot south westerly at the Yngling World Championships in La Rochelle. Everyone took to the water expecting similar conditions to yesterday, with the chance of less breeze followed by a predicted storm towards the end of racing.

In the Women’s fleet there was an individual recall, however, by the first leeward mark Sarah Ayton (GBR) was leading what was proving to be a very competitive and incredibly tightly packed fleet. The Ukrainian crew of Ruslana Taran, Anna Kalinna and Svetlana Matevusheva found a way to win the race just ahead of the British crew.

After a general recall for race two caused by a large wind shift the fleet had to be postponed due to a course change. Within 20 minutes the heavens opened and a large thunder storm with frequent lightning flashes started, at which point the race officer Luciano Giacomi (ITA) had no option but to cancel racing for the day.

Overal the British crew of Sarah Ayton leads the women’s fleet with an un-characteristic ninth place for Sally Barkow (USA) she will hope to make amends tomorrow. All remains tight in the results, with no run away leader, racing continues tomorrow.
