Looking for excitement? Want to show your dedication to the seafaring world? Then the Royal Marines Lighthouse Challenge could be the event for you!
Seafarers UK, the UK's leading national maritime charity, have linked up with Trinity House, The Northern Lighthouse Board and the world renowned Royal Marines, to bring you a unique challenge event this summer giving you the chance to be one of the first to abseil down one or more of six lighthouses across the UK: Portland Bill, Nash Point, South Stack, Barns Ness, Flamborough Head and Southwold.
All lighthouses are over 65 ft (20 metres) high and set in some beautiful surroundings around our stunning coastline. Safety will be in the hands of the very best experts with the Royal Marines. You don't need to be an experienced abseiler, this is something anyone who's over eighteen can get involved in.
Jon Scourse, Director of Fundraising and Marketing of Seafarers UK, (formally known as King George's Fund for Sailors) said: "The Seafarers UK Royal Marines Lighthouse Challenge will be a fun event to take part in, a real one off. Each participant will be challenged to raise £125, a small amount for such a unique experience and important cause. The money raised will go towards helping those in the seafaring communities who need it most, such as widowed wives of seamen in need of financial support."
Seafarers UK has distributed over £26 million during the past decade, providing support, such as care, financial assistance and education, to all seafarers and their dependants in the Royal Navy, the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets. The Royal Marines Lighthouse Challenge is being held as part of the Seafarers '200' appeal, marking the bi-centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, and aims to help raise an extra £1million.
The challenge will be taking place over a series of weekends throughout May, June and July. It is an individual event but why not encourage you friends or family to take the challenge too [and send us the pictures -ed]
