Michelle Dunne reports from the Southerns in Ireland

Close competition sees Tatsu, raced by Cameron Good, Harry Lewis and Simon Furney of Kinsale Yacht Club, tied with Rigmarole, raced by Martin Byrne, Ailbe Mellerick and Con Murphy of the Royal St. George Yacht Club at the end of the first day of the Dragon Southern Championship at Kinsale Yacht Club.

Tatsu had a resounding win in the first race, with close competition between Rigmarole and fellow club members Andrew Craig, Sean Craig and Aidan O'Connell, so close in fact that one protested the other.

After a steady 15 knot northerly breeze for the first race, the wind shifted and died off during the afternoon, causing OOD Alan Crosbie to shorten the second race.

Glandore's Adrian Bendon, Eamon Timoney and Andrew Woodward racing Phyloong lead for most of the race but were caught on the last beat by Rigmarole and Tatsu, who finished first and second in that order.

Results (subject to protest)

Race 1:
1. Tatsu (C. Good / H. Lewis / S. Furney),
2. Rigmarole (M. Byrne / A. Mellerick / C. Murphy),
3. Chimaera (A. Craig / S. Craig / A. O'Connell)

Race 2:
1. Rigmarole,
2. Tatsu,
3. Phyloong (A. Bendon / E. Timoney / A. Woodward)
