50 young people wanted to crew in Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race

Young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who live full time in Portsmouth or Gosport will be eligble to apply

The search is on for 50 young people in Portsmouth and Gosport to experience the adventure of a lifetime this summer with a trip on board two tall ships. To celebrate the finish of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in Portsmouth Harbour in August, the Portsmouth Harbour Organising Committee are arranging places on board two tall ships for 50 local young people to participate in the race.
Plans are being revealed next week how young people can apply to take part in the race on board the tall ships Stavros S Niarchos and Lord Nelson.

The 50 lucky young people will join the Cutty Sark Tall Ships fleet for the final leg of the race from Santander in Spain to Portsmouth beginning on August 6 2002. They will arrive back in Portsmouth Harbour to join in with the celebrations in the historic waterfront from August 15 to 18.

The opportunity is for 48 young crew to sail on the Sail Trainng Association 's 195ft brig, Stavros S Niarchos and for two physically disabled young sailors who will join the 141ft barque Lord Nelson operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust.

All young people between the ages of 16 and 24 for the Stavros S Niarchos and 16 and 25 for the Lord Nelson, who live full time in Portsmouth or Gosport will be eligble to apply. No previous sailing experience is necessary just a desire to be an active member of the crew.

The Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race, run by the International Sail Training Association based in Gosport, is an annual international youth event bringing young people together from around the world to share the challenge of life at sea under sail.

Each year the fleet of sail training vessels visits different ports. In 2002 they are visiting Alicante, Malaga, La Coruna, Brest, Santander and finally Portsmouth Harbour.
