Richard Langdon's impressive images of Jez Fanstone's VO60 News Corp

Sunday December 16th 2001, Author: Richard Langdon/Ocean Images, Location: United Kingdom

Marine photographer Richard Langdon (above), 38, went straight into yachting photography after a two year course at Bournemouth College of Art and Design. His first major client was Champagne Mumm, and he worked for them covering the photographic side of the Admiral's Cup in 1991.

Today when he is not out at regattas, he is based in Poole or in Murcia, Spain. Regular clients include Performance Sailcraft and Skandia. In the last Whitbread Round the World Race he worked as the official photographer for the Brunel Sunergy and Swedish Match teams. With his foot in the door he was contracted to work for Jez Fanstone's News Corp this time round. "I knew Jez from when he was Finn sailing," says Richard.

A keen waveboarder, more than a yachtsman, Richard still prefers to be in the thick of the action when it comes to his yacht racing photography. On board photographers rarely get to sail during the Volvo Ocean Race, so Richard relished the opportunity to sail News Corp across the Atlantic with the team earlier this year. "I love the on board stuff, hence the Atlantic was a major opportunity or the team and for me."

A technical photographer, Richard has had much custom gear made for on board photography such as carbon fibre housings for his cameras. Check out Richard's website.
