Vendee Globe - 1330 - 19/1/01

Mark Chisnell reports as it stays ugly out there

Friday January 19th 2001, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Weather at 0616, 20/1/01By Saturday morning (right) this low pressure system is well formed and east of the fleet, headed off to beat up the leaders in The Race. High pressure is moving off the coast of South America to replace it, and this is setting up a solid south-westerly flow all the way north, maybe even as far as Michel Desjoyeaux's current position.

The tortured leader may finally get some decent breeze, but by then Ellen could well be breathing down his neck.

This forecast could almost be designed to test Desjoyeaux, and he will need all of his legendary cool and strategic nous to hold it together in the next couple of days.

Weather at 0520, 21/1/01By Sunday morning (right) that high pressure will be dominating the race track and the fortunes of the leading six. It will muscle its way east across the South Atlantic, where it will eventually join with the declining eastern high to take up its rightful position straddling its eponymous ocean.

As it does so, the light air in the centre will roll across the course, and those skippers who can spend the least time in this area, and the most time in the downwind conditions of the eastern side of the high, will fare best in the next two or three days.

Easier said than done, and looking north of that high, there is very little to cheer up Michel Desjoyeaux. The south-easterly trade winds seem to be receding away from him just as fast as he can get north. Challenging times indeed.
