60ft trimarans for the next Volvo Ocean Race? It would have been interesting to see how the multis might have fared in the first leg of the Volvo, with all that upwind slogging. Certainly not ideal conditions. Off the wind they would probably fare pretty well, assuming that they're beefed up enough to handle running into the back of waves at 30 knots in the Southern Ocean.

Is this more interesting then the Volvo Ocean Race and if so, why? Yes it is since there would be more differentiated boat designs and options. Fascinating boat performance. Crew of 2 only. The Volvo is only interesting because of its route around the globe. The best is The Race, around the globe with multihulls in 60 days!

Why do TV use sailing as filler? TV is a populistic media. This means that sailing as a sport is not regarded as anything that the big masses are interested in. In fact the reputation of sailing as being a snobbish sport works against it. Up here on the roof of the world, we are kept totally in darkness considering this matter. Thank God or whoever, we do have the possibility of using satellite TV or cable TV. Both systems are sending the only sportschannel here (Eurosport).

This is in fact the ONLY channel to show us any sailing at all. Sailing (at least here) is regarded to be a sport that only very rich people participate in and therefore not to be of big interest to the "normal Smiths" here. On the state owned TV channels sailing is never shown. We (the active sailors and the yachting clubs) are at the moment taking an active role in spreading the sailing sport. This "project" has been going on now for a couple of years and the response has been fantastic.

When people begin to understand that sailing is not hard to learn and it need not be expensive the feedback is very good. This we think is one way of showing (also TV) that we are many here who are interested in sailing!
