Miranda Merron - a madforsailing profile
Thursday May 24th 2001, Author: Sian Cowen, Location: United Kingdom
Miranda Merron first entered the public eye when she became part of Tracy Edward's
Royal & Sun Alliance team. With Tracy she sailed two-thirds of the way round the world attempting to break the Jules Verne Trophy record before disaster struck with the dismasting of their catamaran.
Since then she has joined forces with fellow Royal & Sun Alliance crew woman Emma Richards and the two have become interested in short handed racing. In 1999 they sailed Pete Goss' Open 50 in the Transat Jacques Vabre sponsored by Pindar.
Recently Merron and Richards have opted to 'further their solo careers'. Merron, who lives in Hamble, now has her focus firmly on the 2004 Vendee Globe.
Where were you born?
Oxford, UK
What’s your date of birth?
2 July 1969
What age did you start sailing?
Age five, on the Seine - scary, with lots of barges going up and down the river.
What was your first regatta win?
I think it was crewing for my father in his International 14 when I was eight or nine, on Lake Ontario. Very light airs and very light combined weight in our boat.
What’s your biggest event or championship win?
- Transat Jacques Vabre (double-handed), first in class II.
- International 14 Japanese National Championships - father /daughter combination worked again, this time because it was blowing dogs off chains and we had the heaviest combined weight in our boat!
Any other notable regattas you’d like to mention?
World record Cowes-St Malo on Royal & SunAlliance (six hours 49 minutes); 15,000 miles of the Jules Verne round the world record attempt, until dismasting in Southern Ocean before Cape Horn.
Some of the Caribbean/ Florida regattas - great weather, competition and onshore entertainment. Somewhere along the line, there’s a first in class at Key West and a third at Antigua Race Week.
Which event will you be taking part in next?
EDS Atlantic Challenge
Where did you grow up?
France, Canada, Puerto Rico, Japan
