Goss talks about Team Philips MkII

"If I had my time again it would be the same boat"

Pete Goss is planning to build a Team Philips 'Mk 2', according to a webchat session where the sailor and innovator answered questions from the public.

Responding to a question on the live Q&A session on www.petegoss.com, Goss commented: "I do have three projects up my sleeve which excite me, one of which is building the next generation of Team Philips."

But he said he wanted a natural break before undertaking a project of such ambition again: "I just want to let the dust settle for a few healthy months to sort out issues relating to the loss of Team Philips and give myself and the team some time to reflect before committing to another big project."

Goss admitted that the sponsorship by Philips was over, but said they would be his first port of call were he to attempt the project again. "With the loss of Team Philips the sponsorship is obviously over, however, we still have a relationship with people who have worked as long, as hard and as passionately for what we did. Until such time as I decide what to do next this is how it will remain. Obviously the sponsors that I have worked with in the past would be the first people who I would approach."

He defended the radical design of the boat and the way in which he tackled his much-criticised campaign to compete in The Race: "If I did a TP2 the main ingredients would remain the same, but would be based on the wisdom that we have learned. I don't think there would be any dramatic change."

He went on: "There is video from our final sail which we managed to save and at the moment we are exploring the possibility of a documentary... It's fantastic material showing Team Philips strutting her stuff and demonstrating that Adrian Thompson's concept is truly ground breaking and backs up what I have said all along. If I had my time again it would be the same boat."

Goss was adamant that the radical concept was along the right lines. "Team Philips was designed for high average speeds not high peak speeds. We always felt confident that 40 knots would be easily achievable and given that we got to 35 knots at around 60-70% of power. I am happy in my mind that we created what we were looking for. Beyond 40 knots would be impossible to predict but I am sure that we would have got there on the odd occasion. 60 knots - who knows!"
