....regarding the Jubilee, Volvo and also the 29er and 39er

Any further opinions on the 39er? The 39er will probably struggle due to the lack of any decent racing circuit. 400's get events all over the country along with various other RS boats, the same then goes for the 4000, which has the 5000 to go sailing with. The 29er as a youth boat has already got a substantial following, but outside of the younger sailors has very few 21+ sailors in it. This means that very few people go to the circuit events unless it is involved in the Volvo programme. The 49er has very few events, and is very limited as to what sort of venues you can sail it at, along with the B14... If the 39er is to succeed then a big push on circuit and club racing is going to be needed by Ovington, Whilst doing their very best to keep people sailing the B14 at the same time - Should be interesting to say the least!

What are your memories from this classic event? I am skipper and owner of Saphaedra, third in the Classic Division 3 at the Jubilee. Here is the event that means America's Cup Jubilee Racing in Cowes to me: We were rounding a leeward mark in hard 2.5 knots current in the Solent on Day 5, when a big dark yawl, the former royal yacht Bloodhound starts to cut inside of us. With a big sea running, and all that current, I couldn't turn from the helm to see if this bigger yawl knew what they were doing, putting her bow between our twenty tons and the big government buoy. So I called to David "Does this guy know what he is doing? Or are we about to be T-boned?" David looked back and replied "Don't worry. It's Sir Peter Blake at the helm." And round they came and took off to windward inside of us.

It doesn't feel so bad when the best Pros in the world beat you around the course. In other Classic yacht events, I have avoided heavy tonnage yachts which were out of control, and sometimes lost a place or two because someone on the other boat didn't know enough to play by the rules. Not in the this Regatta. The best sailors in the world were there, and it was sheer pleasure to be a part of the event, even though we were on the smallest American boat in the fleet, and nobody has been taking our picture or calling up for interviews. We got no pros on board, no crew uniforms, and no RIB tender, but we got to play with the big budget boys and it sure was fun!

Could it have been a whale? Must have been a school of whales as at least five Mumms reported hitting something in the area North of Seascope and Air Canada. We stopped once and hit two or three times more over a hundred yards. The depth sounder was reading 0 ft. Maybe someone should go out and resound the area before the Winter Series.

Should we have more match racing events in the UK? No , we do not need more match racing. It has little to do with normal racing as the most important part of match racing is attempting to force the opposite boat to create a foul. Hardly an honourable or sporting thing to do. As in most Americas Cup races, the winner of the start wins the race, It's usually over at the start. Match racing is valuable only as training for Americas Cup skippers. and because the Am. Cup is so important , the top skippers are forced to hone their starting skills in match racing.

Which boat do you think he will chose? A slightly simplistic argument perhaps, but I believe that in the same Farr designed boat as the other challengers, Dalton will be up against it, purely because he was doing such an awesome job with The Race while the other Volvo syndicates were out getting on with it. With this in mind, should he see any advantages with the Freers boat at all, even if these advantages rely on untypical weather stats, my belief is that he should take this gamble. It will hardly be a sh**t or bust gamble anyway because the race will be so competitive. There is no doubt that he too would be competitive in the Farr design, and perhaps would win the odd leg, but I don't believe he would win the race. In order to do that, he has to compete on different terms than the syndicates who spent so much more time on the water, and the only way he can do this is by going for the Freers boat.
