Flying Fifteens in 2002

On the rule change front the class has little major happening. If the ISAF accepts the recently proposed changes then their will be an increase in corrector weight from March 2002, from 10 to 20 Kg, allowing a saving in expensive material and the possibility of an eventual return of the hull weight to the Uffa Fox original of 125Kg - original wooden boats were built to this until the early tanked versions. No carbon masts or sail cloth changes are envisaged in the near future although a watch will be kept on developments.
Most other changes in the pipeline are non-contentious except perhaps for the hiking strap rule changes which would legalize the use of hobbles. Because of worries over responsibility if someone drowned due to there use, the matter will be debated at the ISAF Keelboat Committee.
The next World Championships are in Ireland in 2003 so 2002 will be a qualification year, the UK Nationals, Southern, Northern and Inland championships will count, with 30 BIFFA boats expected to qualify.
