Mulder and de Koning European champions
After a very exciting medal race the Dutch team of Mandy Mulder and Coen de Koning won the first ever Nacra 17 European Championship, held out of Centro Vela Dervio on Lake Como.
After a postponement due to a lack of wind, the final medal race started at 14.30. The top four after 12 races were the the French team of Francois Morvan & Marie Riou in first place on 41 points, but tied on points with the Swiss team of Matias Buhler and Nathalie Brugger with another French team, Moana Valreaux and Manon Audinet in third on 43 points followed by the Dutch team of Mandy Mulder and Coen de Koning on 46 points.
In a light and shifty winds of the Medal Race, it was the Austrian team of Thomas Zajac and Tanja Frank that won with Mandy Mulder and Coen de Koning taking second with Franck Cammas and Sophie de Turckheim third. This upturned the overall final results completely with Mulder and de Koning came out on top followed by Valreaux and Audinet and with Morvan and Riou third overall.
For Mulder and de Koning this concluded a difficult sailing week for a very strong field competitors, with 13 races sailed, one protest lost and an OCS. This partnership has still very new, although both have a very strong sailing backgrounds with Mulder from Olympic women's match racing and de Coning a former F18 World Champion.
