South West win out
Thursday May 15th 2003, Author: Sasha Oswald, Location: United Kingdom
The South West Zone dominated the 2003 ET Final winning both the dinghy and windsurfing team events, to take the prestigious Eric Twiname Shield for best overall team. The South East and West Zones were tied in second place, ahead of the South and East Zones who were both strong favourites in the lead up to the event.
Over 200 young sailors made the trip to Rutland Water Sailing Club over the weekend of the 10/11 May to compete in the Final. The sailors had been specially selected by their RYA High Performance Manager and class coach to represent their Zone/Home Country at the Finals following months of hard training in their RYA Zone/Home Country Squad over the winter and spring. Teams competed in almost perfect conditions and completed the full schedule of six races.
"I was delighted with my teams performance as they dominated both the dinghy and windsurfing classes. In particular I was impressed with our performances in the Topper and Mirror dinghy classes and the 4.5m and 5.5m windsurfing classes. This tremendous performance will provide our sailors with an excellent platform to build from as they prepare for the National Junior Squad indicator events coming up this summer" commented Duncan Truswell, the RYA High Performance Manager for the South West.
Steve Joel, RYA Youth Racing Manager, said "I was really pleased with the quality of the racing and the intensity of the competition over the weekend. Every sailor should be extremely proud of their achievement in being selected to represent their Zone or Home Country at the Finals. My congratulations go to everyone who has supported the South West team to achieve their success. I'm sure it will drive every other team to work even harder at improving their performance at next year's Finals. Finally, I would like thanks Rutland Sailing Club for their outstanding organisation of the event and the Eric Twiname Trust for their continued support of the Finals and the RYA Junior and Youth Programme."
