Draper and Hiscocks maintain lead

The RYA's Sacha Oswald reports on the 49er Europeans

After ten races, Team GBR sailors Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks maintain their position at the front of the fleet. In windy conditions gusting 18 knots at times, they finished the day with a 4,2,7,2 score line giving them the overall lead from Marcus Baur and Max Groy of Germany. Defending European champions Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez are currently lying in third place overall.

The sailors that faired well today were the ones that managed to keep their boats upright in the gusty conditions; a 'cartwheel' in the fourth race for RYA Development Squad sailors Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes saw them drop to thirteenth place overall, whilst team mates Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith capsized twice in the last race of the day, consequently they finished the race in 22nd position and are currently lying in fourteenth place overall.

With two more race days to go, with three races scheduled for tomorrow and two on the final day, there is still all to play for. A second discard will come into the equation shortly and the next two days are bound to see some exciting racing.

The event continues through until Saturday 19 July.
