Light winds dog 49er Europeans

During first day of racing at Laredo, Spain

Monday July 14th 2003, Author: Sasha Oswald, Location: none selected
A lack of wind on the first day of the 49er European Championships meant that the full schedule of races could not be sailed. The 90 boats competing were split into four groups and it was only the yellow and blue group that completed two races today. Only one race was sailed by the green group and there was no sailing for the red group.

Racing got underway in 9-10 knots but poor visibility and a drop in the wind strength forced the race committee to cancel the racing at 17.00 hours.

It was a good start for Team GBR sailors Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks, who managed two third places in the tricky conditions. No overall results are available due to the inconsistent number of races sailed.

The event continues through until Saturday 19 July.
