Adam Richards wins season opener

A report from the Cadets at RYA South & South West Zone Winter Regatta, Poole Yacht Club

A high quality fleet of 39 Cadets gathered at Poole Yacht Club together with approx 150 Oppies, Toppers & Mirrors for the RYA South & South West Zone Winter Regatta.

The event provided Zone Squad members with an excellent early season opportunity to test their progress against each other and most of the Southern based National Squad crews.

The event was very well run and five races were completed on the day over a trapezoid course in a firm force 4 westerly breeze.

Will & James Rusden got off to flying start and were the early leaders of Race 1 pursued by Adam Richards and Sam Muskett and Elliot Parsons & Jenny Lennon. Will & James sailed well and held their lead to the finish ahead of Adam & Sam.

Adam & Sam, who are the current no 1 UK ranked Cadet crew, were the early leaders of Race 2 followed by Elliot & Jenny and Charlotte Lawrence & Molly Bridge. Charlotte & Molly passed Elliot on the second beat and closed to within a boat length of Adam by the finish. Adam & Sam repeated their win in Race 3 to take a clear lead in the regatta ahead of the Rusdens who sailed another fine race to finish second and the consistent Elliot & Jenny who scored yet another third.

Robbie Allam and Amy Yeoman, whose own boat was away for a refit, had struggled in their borrowed boat in the morning races. However their results were transformed in the two afternoon races and they led both from start to finish. They were followed home in Race 4 by Elliot & Jenny and Jack Lees-Smith & Alistair Laycock who sailed an excellent race despite being holed before the start to finish 3rd. In the final race Alex & Josephine Palmer coped well with shifting breeze to finish second ahead of William Hearn & Joshua Flack.

Adam & Sam were clear overall winners ahead of the Elliot & Jenny and Oren Richards and Connie Stock who had scored consistently well throughout the day. Although the Rusden brothers were the only Zone squad members to break the National Squad domination of the top 6 places, there were some other exceptional performances by Zone Squad sailors, notably James & Edward Jaffa in 8th and Jasmine Husband & Bethany Bridge in 10th.
