Cumbley takes Finn Nationals
Monday July 21st 2003, Author: Phil Laycock, Location: United Kingdom
40 boats competed in this year's Finn Nationals at Warsash Sailing Club with many competitors taking part for the first time, proving that British Finn scene is still in very good shape.
The series took place in fabulous sailing weather with eight races over three days in wind conditions ranging from force 2 to 5 with some great wave sailing conditions.
Race officer Peter Knight is to be complimented for running the second great event in two years.
Notable absentees were Ben Ainslie who was sailing Chernikeeff 4 in the Admiral's Cup duty and two others who were training in Cadiz in preparation for the Worlds.
Charlie Cumbley won the event holding off Irish Olympic hopeful Aaron O’Grady despite a late challenge by the Irishman. Similarly Ed Greig held off the challenge of Adam Cowling to take third place with his brother Tom (Goliath) in 5th.
The prize for the first Finn sailor 'with a proper job'..ie: non funded or student etc went to Nick Daniels in 6th place who battled with Phil Laycock all weekend for the crown, Phil finishing 7th.
First Master (over 40) was Sander Kooij for the second year, finishing 8th.
First over 60 was Richard Hart who came an incredible 9th place after sailing a superb series showing the younger sailors how it should be done. Since buying a new boat he has seen a new lease of life. Richard did his first nationals 40 years ago.
