Catamaran spectacular of the Round Texel Race

With 579 entries and 462 finisher the final outcome in the 26th Round Texel was an exciting one. Just a few metres from the finish line Peter Vink and Sven de Laaf passed race favourites Gunnar Larsen and Xander Pols to take line honours on elapsed time.

Vink and Laaf made their rounding of the Dutch island in a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and 19 seconds, finishing just 9 seconds ahead of Larsen and Pols. Peter Vink said in a first reaction: ‘We always sail all right on Texel, but we always just miss. Now we finally dit it!’ commented Vink. Sveen de Laaf was also over the moon: “Fantastic. But if it had been 20 minutes longer I would have died."

They had been beaten over the line by SPA winners Leigh McMillan and Mark Bulkeley, but the British Tornado duo were disqualified for being OCS at the start. The team protested, but the jury decided after they’d seen the video images, that they had been early by 10 seconds.

World Tornado champion Darren Bundock sailing with Will Howden was third home in a time of 2.40.01, and won the event on corrected time.
