Worrell 1000 race stage five
Friday May 10th 2002, Author: Nigel Cherrie, Location: United States
The fifth leg of the Worrell 1000 was won and lost on the beach at Jacksonville yesterday as
Athletes in Action led the fleet into the finish but ran aground, handing victory for the 79-mile stage from Daytona to the
Castrol team.
Chris Sawyer, sailing with new crew Jim Zellmer (previous hand Matt Struble had prior business commitments) looked in good shape for his second leg win approaching the beach but had trouble dropping the kite. While trying to sort their gennaker problem, both sailors neglected to raise the starboard daggerboard and ran hard aground.
Joseph Sonnenklar and John Casey on Castrol seized the opportunity to slip through and win their second leg in five hours, six minutes and seven seconds.
After dislodging themselves from the beach and getting their spinnaker in the bag, Athletes in Action managed to hold on second position and officially finished 35 seconds later. They are now second overall.
Stephen Lohmayer and Kenneth Pierce on Tybee Island were third into Jacksonville and are still leading overall, with a two minute and 17 second advantage over Athletes in Action.
Today the eighteen Inter 20 catamarans will race 121.3 miles north to Tybee Island in the state of Georgia.
