The Travemunde masses
Sunday July 20th 2003, Author: Andreas Kling, Location: none selected
More than 3,000 sailors from 25 nations are sailing from Friday, 18 July until Sunday, 27 July in the 114th Travemuende Week on the Baltic Sea near Luebeck in Germany.
The first winners out of nearly 1,000 boats have already been announced: Martin Moritz from Linsengericht, Germany won in the Mistral One-Design class in great style and the team Axel Reinsch/Oliver Marquardt from Hamburg dominated the 14-footer fleet. The keelboats ended their regatta without racing on Sunday due to lack of wind. But the blistering heat caused some sea breeze later in the afternoon and allowing for some good racing.
The next days the scene in Travemuende will heat up even more. Three European and one World Championships as well as three Euro Cups are being held within Travemuende Week:
Hobie 14 (Worlds),
29er
A-Class catamarans
Hobie Tiger (all Europeans),
Sportsboats,
Musto Skiff
Hobie FX-One (all EuroCup).
The 71 individuals strong A-Cat fleet started their fights for the open European title already and it was Aussie veteran Scott Anderson showing an excellent performance with two victories in two races. Sascha Wallmer from Switzerland is holding the Swedish Tornado maestro Goeran Marstroem back in third.
In the Mistral board 20-year old Moritz Martin surfed past the 21 challenging men and women and scored five firsts in seven races. From the beginning he dominated the fleet and André Hartung (22) from Kiel had to accept second place five points behind. While
Olympic silver medallist Amelie Lux was not taking part, her national competitor Romy Kinzl from Berlin showed, that she could cope with the mixed fleet. After a first in the last race she overtook Richard Stauffacher from Switzerland to take 'bronze'.
Among the 14-footers the favourites clearly showed their strength from the beginning. Reinsch/Marquardt ended seven of their eleven races in front of the fleet, and the 26- and 27- year olds truly deserved the victory. Local heroes Peter Roocks and Ole Klinger from Luebeck secured a second with Ralf Meier and Jan Witte (Gross Wittensee, Germany) following third in the fleet of 15 boats.
The best offshore sailors from Friday and Saturday could not loose their lead today and where crowned winners of the Travemuende Week, on Sunday.
Race officer Andreas Stuelcken tried to start a race, despite the unstable and slow winds, but had to abandon after a 180 degree wind shift.
In the class IMS I Jens Kellinghusen his IMX 45 Varuna showed with that he cannot only sail 3,600 miles across the Atlantic but can sail fast around the buoys too. His latest success was the 12th place in the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge. Now he has won at Travemuende Week. The OSC I class went to Eric Wolf from Kiel with Bubetti.
