One day at Rutlland

The 29er and 49er fleet only managed a single day of racing at their Rutland Open

Teams arrived at Rutland for their annual 29er and 49er open to be greeted with a damp windless morning. Fortunately the mist lifted a little allowing a light Easterly breeze to cover the lake. The event was combined with the Musto Skiffs and B14s, because of numbers the 29ers had their own course while the 49ers shared with the Musto Skiffs. The shifty conditions proved challenging and not particularly exiting for the 9ers but both fleets had close tight racing. Sundays forecast was a lot more promising but when the competitors arrived in the morning they were greeted with un-sailable conditions and racing was cancelled for the day.

On the 49er race track the four races sailed on Saturday were won by teo two teams – Richard Bone and Chris Rodway winning two and Simon Evans and Stephen Cronshaw also winning two. Evans and Cronshow took first overall with their better positions in the races they did not win. The fight for third place was between Chris Pickles and Matt Sharman and Daniel and Jamie Hare who ended Saturday on equal points. It was Pickles and Sharmen who took third on the tie break.

The 29er event was a bit of a family affair, James Peters and Ed Fitzgerald stamped their authority on the fleet pulling off three firsts and a second. While Frances Peters and Claire Lasko took a first and three seconds. As in the 49er fleet the fight for third place was close battle between Mike Wood and Ollie Spensley-Corfiled and Max Richardson and Alex Groves who ended up on equal points. Once again the tie break came in and gave Wood and Spensley-Corfiled third place. Consistency was the name of the game for Tom Durham and Alex Cooper – they came in fifth with 4,5,5,6.

Big thanks to Rutland who put a lot of effort in to making sure the skiffs got good fair race tracks and got the four races away on Saturday.
