Top two to Spain

Spanish teams reign supreme after day three of the 49er Europeans in Palma

The Spanish teams continue to dominate the 49er European championship – Madrid 2016 at the end of the third day in Club Nàutic S’Arenal.

Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández remain at the top of the leaderboard and second place is now taken by the crew from Asturias, Federico and Arturo Alonso although they are tied with third and fourth. Martinez and Fernandez, Spain's representatives for the 2008 Beijing Games, have already gone eight points ahead of their immediate rivals.

Strong, gusty and changeable south westerly winds of around 18 knots blew again dominated the bay of Palma today, Wednesday. The Race Committee of Club Nàutic S’Arenal gave three starts in the two racing areas in which each group competes. These were the last races of the qualifying series and tomorrow the 54 boat fleet – representing 22 nations - will sail the final series, divided in Gold and Silver groups.

Martínez and Fernández are on the good track to defend the European title they won last year in Sicily. The Spanish sailors had an excellent day today, however, most crews managed irregular performances. Three teams follow them on equal points. Second place is the Spanish team of Federico and Arturo Alonso. Currently in third place are Jonas Lindberg and Kalle Torlen (SWE), while young Austrian sailors, Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Leopold Resch dropped down from second to fourth.

Italian brothers, Pietro and Gianfranco Sibello, also dropped one place and are now fifth after two sixth finishes and a third. The battle for sixth place is between the Ukrainian crew of Rodion Luka and Geogiy Leonchuk, another of the strong teams in this event organised by Club Nàutic S’Arenal.

In the meantime, a number of favourite teams are having a dissapointing regatta. The German Peckolt brothers are 15th, Nathan Outteridge and Austin Ben (AUS) are four places behind that and the British team of Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes are 24th overall.

Three races are scheduled tomorrow from 12:00 hours at Club Nàutic S’Arenal. These will be the first races of the final series, with the top 27 teams in the gold fleet. The final round is sailed until Saturday to decide the top ten crews that will sail the Medal race scheduled for Sunday.

The 49er European Championship is sponsored by Fundación Madrid 2016, the regional ministries of Tourism, Sports and Youth of the Govern de les Illes Balears and Llucmajor city council. Firms Engel & Völkers and Cadillac are collaborators and Seiko is the class sponsor.
