he Edge III practice sailing upwind. Note the three slots wide opened. Also the rear seats which help the crew to avoid pitchpoling on a reach. On the training edge of the wing they also had a 'zap-flap'. All the Cunningham wings had this device, mostly used downwind to increase the camber of the wing. (The 1996 winner
Cogito did not).

1991 Little America's Cup races.
Freedom's Wings, the US challenger vs The Edge III. The Morelli designed boat tried to be very light with lower freeboard and probably less material involved in the building. The contest was the closest since 1985, but culminated in a failure of the main crossarm and a dramatic dismasting in one of the races.

Close finish... Just one second separated the American challenger and the winner, The Edge III on the finishing line - the closest result ever in LAC history. The Australians had trouble with the upper part of their wingmast, the "barn door", which depowers the rig, during that race.
