Ding ding, round six

The sixth round of the ten event Trident sponsored Topper North Eastern Area Travellers Series took place at Beaver Sailing Club on Saturday 7 June. An excellent fleet of 22 boats arrived with a good mix of home boats and circuit regulars. They were greeted with beautiful weather and light breezes, although the forecast suggested that the winds would increase during the day. The plan was to have two races back to back before lunch with teo more after.
Race one was delayed briefly as the wind refused to stay steady. When the race finally got away home sailor Emma Grayson got the line into to the first mark spot on to lead the fleet, closely followed by Alex Leonard and the rest of the pack. After this the circuit regulars showed their experience to come to the fore. As the wind faded the course was shortened with the order being Alex Leonard followed by Jack Wetherell, Samantha Towers, Julie Harris and Henry Wetherell. An early lunch was taken to let the wind build.
Race two had a couple of early starters but still got away first time. Will Hackney led at the first mark and extended for most of the race. With one lap to go he was hunted down by Sam Towers and was overtaken but he dug deep to come back to take the gun from Sam, Julie Harris, Jack Wetherell, Will Glover and Alex Leonard.
Race three had several boats in with a chance of the overall prize. A pile up at the pin end when Seb Milner hooked the buoy caused a few problems. Alex Leonard managed to escape from mid line and led the race from gun to gun. The following pack were nip and tuck all the way round, but at the finish it was Jack Wetherell second, Jeremy Collins third and Sam Towers fourth.
Another very competitive event was over with the top prize going to Alex Leonard of Sheffield Vikings, a regular visitor to events at Beaver. With four events still to go the overall leader of the series is Jack Wetherell counting three firsts and two seconds although everyone expects the final result to go to the wire, with several other boats putting together consistent results.
