Moths 'loose that luvin' feeling'

Racing canned as cabin fever starts to set in at Weymouth

How many times can you type 'no sailing, too much wind' I hear you cry. At least once more will have to be the very trying answer. Yet again racing has been blown off in Weymouth at the CST Composites Moth World Championships.

The day started badly with 40 knots in the harbour and didn't really improve that much from there. Early on 'Top Gun' was put on the big screen in the cafeteria to the delight of several who duly sang along to 'you've lost that loving feeling.' However, it is now clear the fleet are getting itchy fleet and want to hit the water. Even the hanger which has been a hive of activity is seeing much less traffic as people run out of things they can adjust on their boats without going sailing.

Around the middle of the day there was a chance for designers to address the fleet and talk about their plans for the future (more on this later) which was followed by a sail setting demonstration from sail making guru Andrew MacDougall in the hangar.

The forecast for tomorrow looks better (just) and the hope is some racing might go ahead then. However, Wednesday looks to be another big breeze day so expect some more of the same before the week is out.

So, the situation is two days down and no racing yet. The clock is now very firmly ticking and it is hard to find the right words to convey the mixture of annoyance and frustration now emanating from the majority of the fleet. People are tetchy, bored and running out of things to say and do. Perhaps tomorrow will bring better conditions...Perhaps.
