Gusty day three
Wednesday August 27th 2008, Author: Toby Heppell, Location: United Kingdom
The third day of the Gul RS800 Nationals saw westerly breezes once again, providing shifty racing in a gusty force three blowing off the shore.
Overnight leaders Ben McGrane and Olivier Vidal got the right side of the 30 degree shift which hit as the fleet started to take an early lead which was never challenged. Stevie Wilson and Jamie Stewart secured another second, with Justin Deal and Ollie Page coming in third.
Ben Schooling and Tim Hirst finished fourth to continue their consistent series, which leaves them third overall by the end of the day.
The second race of the day saw three boats break away from the pack, those being McGrane and Vidal, Deal and Page and Phil King and Tom Trueman. At the finish Deal and Page held off McGrane and Vidal, which left McGrane and Vidal with a commanding overnight lead after an impressive string of consistent results.
Ralph Singleton and James Clark had a good day with a fifth and seventh to pull them up overall, and new silver fleet leaders are Andrew Smith and Micky Boughton in 11th.
