Support for the Devil

The Strait 4 Devils team is in readiness for its Bass Strait crossing that is due to commence about 06.00 local time on Tuesday, 17 March. The primary aim of the crossing of Bass Strait in a B14 sailing skiff is to bring attention to the plight of the unique animal, the Tasmanian devil and the facial tumour disease that has decimated populations throughout east and central Tasmania. Another reason to sail across Bass Strait in a B14 dinghy is because it has not been done before!
You probably know from reading the website Strait 4 Devils that the Tasmanian devil facial tumour disease was probably caused by a chance mutation. Researchers have looked for evidence that some form of environmental toxin might be involved, but have failed to find any evidence. The disease is able to spread between individuals because Tasmanian devils (particularly in the eastern part of the State) are so genetically similar to each other that they don't recognize the tumour cells as being "non-self" or foreign. This vital research costs money so you are invited to assist in making a donation to help save this unique marsupial. Donations can be made direct on the Strait 4 Devils website through the University of Tasmania.
You will be able to follow the progress of Adrian Beswick and Josh Phillips as they sail the challenging waters of Bass Strait from Stanley on the north-west coast of Tasmania to Walkerville South in Victoria, a distance of about 119 nautical miles (220 kms) by checking their website during the day. The crew hope to complete the distance in 8 to 10 hours.
