Greenhalgh triumphs

Fresh from the Volvo Ocean Race, former JJ winner comes out on top at the 19ft skiffs' Mark Foy Trophy

Saturday July 4th 2009, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
Last day of racing for competitors at the Mark Foy Trophy were held in ideal Brittany conditions: sun, sea and a westerly wind of 13-15 knots.

The gun went for today's first race at 1315, the competitors ready for a final day battling it out on the water.

This first race was won by Rob Greenhalgh's team on Benny, looking comfortable in the slightly stronger wind ahead of their main rivals, Dan Wilson's team on Asko and the Danes on GP Covers.

The second and final race started at 14.30. After a good start, three Australian teams were in the chocolates in this - Grant Rollerson and Slam, scoring their sixth bullet of the regatta, followed by Asko and veteran Trevor Barnabas on 24hrroad.

With two discards available, Greenhalgh's team discarded a DNF in this last race, which was still enough to secure them first place in the Mark Foy Trophy ahead of Slam. This adds yet another trophy to the Greenhalgh mantlepiece along with the JJ Giltinan Trophy and the 18ft skiff European championship and a previous world championship win in the International 14.

It seems that the Mark Foy Trophy is to become a regular event in the 18ft skiff calendar and may return to Carnac in three years after first being held in San Francisco and Sydney in the interim years.
