Maksimiliam Wojcik from Poland is the new World Champion of the Raceboard Class.
Meanwhile his countryman Jonasz Stelmaszyk won the Laser Europe Cup 2009 in the Laser Standard during the first half of the event and Jon Emmett (GBR) secured victory in the Laser Radial class. More than 1700 sailors from 31 nations where fighting in 22 classes on the water. 700 000 visitors came to see the spectacle.
This year's Warnemuende Week started with a lot of wind into its second weekend. But all classes could end three races on Saturday. The last day of the big German sailing event saw only the rest of a breeze and up to 2 races where sailed in light conditions.
It was a tight finish before the world title in the Raceboard class was decided on Saturday. 114 starters brought a record entry for the class and Maksimilian Wojcik could defeat the German challenger Moritz Martin in a tight finish. Martin became second, followed by the Slovakian Patrik Pollack. "In these very changing conditions only all-rounder like Martin or me could win the series and I am very happy about the title in the end", said the 25 year old surfer from Poland. "I was very nervous before the last races started and the pressure was enormous. It is my biggest success so far to win the championship after a world title in the youth class at the age of 16. I love the atmosphere in the Raceboard class, it is pure amateur sport and very different to the Olympic RS:X class in which I train as well", raved the polish surfer, who started for the first time during the Warnemuende Week.
The beaten competitor from Germany was happy about his vice title in the end as well: "I could win the last race, which was good for my motivation and my goal was to be among the top three, so it is a great success for me. I had some spin outs on Saturday due to fin problems, which have cost me some deciding points, as it was really tight", Martin said. Patrik Pollack from Slovakia won Bronze.
The series for the OK class, which held their World Championship last year during Warnemuende Week 2008, was won by New Zealander Greg Wilcox. And in the Olympic Finn Class Jan Kurfeld from Warnemuende showed his top form and won the regatta in style with a series of 6 bullets out of seven races.
About 700 Sailors from 27 nations had already been sailing in the first half of the event. Jonasz Stelmaszyk could win the title in the Laser Europe Cup in the Laser Standard. Jon Emmet (GBR) secured gold in the Laser Radial class. In the German Championship of the RS:X class, Toni Wilhelm from Kiel/Germany took the title and Moritz Martin (Linsengericht/Germany) won the German Championship in the Raceboard class prior to the Worlds. In strong winds, the fleet of 67 yachts sailed their long distance race around the Danish island of Bornholm, but 21 crews had to give up due to the stormy conditions. Scho-ka-kola sailed by Uwe Lebens was first ship home after 38 hours and 51 minutes. The record was not in danger this time, not even by the two participating Volvo 60s SEB II and Illbruck.
"I was a very challenging event for the sailors as well as for the race committees, but all have been coping very well with it", said the satisfied chairman of the Warnemuende Week, Bernd-Leopold Käther after racing had ended.
