Back to the original rig

49er Nationals commence at Hayling Island SC

Sunday August 23rd 2009, Author: Dave Hall, Location: United Kingdom
Hayling Island SC are hosts to the 2009 49er national Championship. The UK class decided that it would sail this years domestic events using the original rig, this has proved to be a good move since the championship has attracted 26 teams from all over the country. Many of the top GBR squad have teamed up with sailors not currently in the squad to have an enjoyable long weekend racing.

Day one brought typical glorious Hayling weather – sunshine and a 10 knot southerly breeze. Through the afternoon the wind softened allowing the lightweights to dominate and with some of the highest tides of the year a number of the fleet fell foul of the black flag.

After three races James Peters and Dicken Mclean head up the leader board but they are sailing with the new rig so their result won’t count towards the National Championship. Phil Walker & and Rob Thomas lie in second and therefore currently lead the championship. The Irish team of Alistair Kissane and Ronan Wallace sailed a steady day to end up third. Some of the expected front runners are counting black flags so are not yet in the running.
