30 years of trying

The final day of the UK Moth National Championship dawned with 30 knot gusts making racing once again seem unlikely. Racing was abandoned for the day early on giving competitors the chance to go to the prize giving and pack up before the morning turned into afternoon.
With no one making any attempt to get out onto the water Jason Belben was officially crowned UK Moth National Champion after a great week of consistent results. “It is great,” Belben said. I have been trying to do it for the last 30 years and it feels good, very good.” Previously the best Belben has done at a Moth National Championship was in 1984 where he was second to Roger Angel.Adam May took second overall in his, now fully tuned, Weapon design while Sam Pascoe was third in his Mistress 3.
Entries were up on previous years, though the recent World Championships in Lake Garda used up a few regulars’ holiday, leaving them unable to attend. The World Championship in 2008 will be sailed from the same venue in Weymouth and the fleet seems confident the team at Weymouth will put on a fantastic event.
