Svenja Puls claims crown at the 118th Travemuende Wee

Competitors enjoyed another day of almost perfect sailing today at the 118th Travemuende Week in Northern Germany. The Euro Cups in the RS classes had four more races on the scoring boards that showed tough fight in the British dominated fleets. After winning the Tornado competition the day before, Christian and Helge Sach (Zarnekau, Germany) were also dominant in the Formula 18 catamaran class scoring three bullets. However, top item of the day was Svenja Puls (Luebeck Yacht Club, LYC) being the new World Champion in the Europe class.

Puls’ cheers resounded the long way from Workum, Netherlands to Travemuende, her home sailing area. The girl from the LYC, race organiser of the Travemuende Week, was ecstatic about winning the World title. It was a great last day when the 22-year-old scored two bullets and won the Championship.

"We are going to congratulate and celebrate with Svenja personally on Saturday when she joins the sailing week,” said Claus Dieter Stolze, head of the Travemuende Week organising team.

As exhausted as Puls was, were most of the teams of the RS classes battled on course area Foxtrott. "We sailed two short and two long races," reported race officer Thorsten Rocksien. "I am sure all the sailors are pooped."

The situation in the RS 700 is still pretty exciting. Nigel Walbank is the overall leader two points ahead of tied Jon Heissig and Rob Chaplin. Christian Brandt from Hamburg, who has been placed fourth for a while, two points behind Mark Pollington, could catch up again and return to third.

Helge Sach was pretty satisfied with his start in the Formula 18 class. Some 100 meters ahead of the runner-ups which mean some minutes in front he crossed the finish line with his brother Christian. "We love the variable conditions," said the crew. "I guess we are faster changing the trim."

There was no way for the chasers Justus Wolf/Susanne Hahn and Andreas John/Hans-Christoph Brumberg from Hamburg to catch up with the last year's World Champions. "It was definitely our wind," said Helge Sach. "It could be different tomorrow."

Strong to stormy wind is predicted for Friday. “A trough is moving across the North during the night. In the morning we expect thunderstorms and heavy gusts up to force ten," explained weather expert Meeno Schrader from Kiel, Germany.

The medium distance race for the yachts heads towards Groemitz on the other end of the Bay of Luebeck and is scheduled for 10:00. The Eurocups of the five RS classes will finish. New on the starting line are more than 50 Folkboats. Another 11 classes continue their races at the 118th Travemuende Week.
