Veal masters Garda

Opening day of Moth Worlds sees competitors struggle with the condtitions

Tuesday June 26th 2007, Author: Event press/dailysail, Location: United Kingdom
The first day at the World and European championships of the International Moth class in Torbole sul Garda lived up to all expectations on Monday. The defending world champion Simon Payne broke part of his rudder and had to come back to shore - a similar fate befell Raimondo Tonelli but he had enough time to get back to the course for the second race. The Australian foiling legend Rohan Veal, without his biggest challenger, went on to win the both races of the day.

A huge number of the fleet posted DNFs in both the first and second races, with Andrew MacDougal, Graham Vials and John Harris all having DNFs for the second race plummeting down the rankings. Only 36 of the 63 competitors posted a result from the day and of those 24 posted results from both races.

"I was third," commented Payne while reparing his boat, "and I was really trying. It is really a pity because it is not easy to recover two DNF. The conditions you can have here at the Garda Lake are hard but beautiful, here you must sail always with great attention. Because of the waves the boat touches always on the sides. Tomorrow I will be again in the water!" Also Tonelli, fifth in the first upwind, had to top the race because of a rudder damage: "I had already some difficulties with material just when I was approaching the mark, then a part ofthe rudder collapsed... good experience anyway!"

"It is very hard to race with these conditions," said Rohan Veal after finishing his races "because you must continually adjust your Moth. It is really hard. We need less waves and less wind. The winner of this regatta will be a real champion in these conditions!"

While on Monday the Ora wind was strong and creating the difficult wave state on the lake is has been discussed that the fleet may race later in the day when the Ora is a little lighter.

Racing continues through to Saturday with Wednesday billed as a layday.
