Poles take victory

Thirty-one 29ers met in Weymouth to see yet another light wind event for round three of their Eurocup. With six of the eight races scheduled sailed, the race committee worked hard to race the fleet in the best of the wind.
Day one saw the Polish team of Lukasz Prybytek and Krzysztof Mongird sail off to the horizon with a convincing lead of six points over James Peters and Ollie Spensley-Corfield in second. On coming ashore after four testing and shifty races we joined the 12ft skiff sailors with the revolutionary ‘aqua skipping’. Some took to it better the others but resulted in a lot of swimming and laughter!
Day two and despite the chat of the heavy weights, the overnight 30 knot breeze sadly disappeared leaving yet another light day! Two races where sailed in under ten knots, with the Polish retaining their lead to win the event. Frances Peters and Hannah Diamond slotted in two exellent results to pull them up to second overall. James Ellis and Rob Partridge blew any chance of catching the leading British boys on Saturday due to a protest that night by Sam Coombs and James Hopson. This left James and Ollie Spensley-Corfield in a clear third position overall, back up to form after a disappointing youth championship.
In fouth place were RYA selected Youth World contenders Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth, who despite their ballistic speed off wind were beaten yet again by Youth Champions Frances Peters and Hannah Diamond, in the more predominantly light breeze. Finishing in fifth were Oscar McVeigh and John Mather with a fifth, tenth, fourth, second and fifth. Nick and Matt Hollis surprised themselves with a race win on the Sunday finishing 12th overall!
