The firmly established ridge on the Queensland coast continued to deliver strong winds to the Capricorn Coast at the F18 World Championship.
Overnight at Yeppoon, the site of the Worlds, winds gusted to 30 knots. This morning the wind eased but as black clouds rolled north, the pressure lifted on the leading edge and the gusts increased.
An AP went up early and at 1pm local time, racing was abandoned for the day with wind gusting into the low 30's.
Race Co-ordinator Mark Laruffa commented, "The forecast looks good at 15-20 for the next two days and organisers are scheduling four races each day, with a mid day break."
Today has been spent around the 22,000 acre Rydges Capricorn Resort with the two golf courses filled with sailors, as are the swimming pools. There are impromptu soccer matches between Dutch and French teams currently in progress.
The archery range is fully booked all afternoon. Sailors are taking full advantage of the Resort's many facilities and there seems to be steady traffic of sailors buying Slam Regatta gear this afternoon too.
Here was this morning's BOM report.
Synoptic Situation.
A 1031 hPa high in the Tasman Sea is expected to maintain moderate to fresh SE trade winds along the south Queensland coast during the forecast period.
Capricornia Waters, St Lawrence to Burnett Heads:
Wednesday until midnight: SE winds 20/25 knots. Seas 2.2 metres. A 1.5 to 2 metre Easterly swell.
Scattered squally showers with gusts to 35 knots.
Thursday: SE winds 15/20 knots. Seas 1.8 metres. A 1.5 to 2 metre Easterly swell. Scattered squally showers.
Friday: SE winds 20 knots.
Saturday: SE winds 20 knots.
The King tides which lapped the sand dunes over the weekend have dropped away and there is now a wide expanse of beach, which means by tonight the entire fleet will be parked on the beach. Most of them were there last night.
Racing was scheduled to start at 10am local time and many crews were down at their boats waiting for confirmation of the day's schedule. Unfortunately, the winds continued to build and the race officials abandoned racing for the day.
