Following their dramatic exploding wing episode last year - see the photos
here - Australian Lindsay Cunningham's legendary Macquarie Speed Sailing Team is back in action with their speed sailing machine
Macquarie Innovation. Her wingmast has been rebuilt, so over the last two years the craft now has a new wingmast, new carbon hulls, foils and rigging, as well as numerous upgrades to its handling systems.
At the time of last year's explosion Macquarie Innovation had been progressing well towards the 50 knot barrier and had achieved 46 knots. As co-pilot Tim Daddo puts it: "After reviewing the above, it was evident that we were within seconds of creating world history and consequently, we have pushed hard to be back on the water, ready for the next chance to sail."
The team have again returned to Sandy Point and are awaiting for the necessary 20 knot southwesterlies they require to reach 50 knots. The Team await patiently the opportunity to rewrite the record books before the end of the year.
The Macquarie Speed Sailing Team have announced today that they had entered a technical partnership with Slam who will become the exclusive supplier of team uniforms and shore based apparel for the forthcoming attempt on the World Sailing Speed Record.
In a separate statement today, the Macquarie Speed Sailing Team were excited to announce that they will be the focus of a new documentary to be co-produced by a joint venture between Canadian and Australian production companies. The documentary will cover the emerging international 'race' to be the first sailing craft to travel faster than 50 knots.
